Regardless, it sends Guy in an interesting new direction. The idea that Hal would ask Guy to act as a double agent and put the red ring back on is akin to asking a former heroin addict to fall of the wagon again, and that seems a bit cruel for Hal. The justification for dragging Guy back into Atrocitus' world is initially weak. This material is much more interesting, as it becomes apparent that Soule is continuing the character arc begun in Peter Tomasi's Green Lantern Corps when Guy first wore the Red Lantern ring. But on the flip side, Soule devotes plenty of attention to the Green Lanterns - specifically Guy Gardner and his close circle of friends. Atrocitus lacks a compelling character arc in the aftermath of "Wrath of the First Lantern." Even the lone interesting scene involving a betrayal and an ensuing brawl quickly fizzles into nothing. There's too little emotional engagement to be had with a group of characters that are already inherently single-minded. Guy Gardner Gets MadThe material actually focused on Atrocitus and the Red Lanterns is easily the weakest of the book. Much like Hal Jordan and his Green Lanterns, Atrocitus seeks a way to rebuild and remold the Red Lanterns into a force to be reckoned with. As the story kicks off, the ranks of the Red Lanterns are depleted. This debut issue is every bit as slow-paced and methodical as Milligan's run tended to be. But Soule doesn't hit the ground running quite like he did on Swamp Thing. He's an ideal candidate as far as finding new life for an ailing book. He took over the reins of Swamp Thing from Scott Snyder and has quickly produced a book that is both markedly different and also superior in some ways. Soule has already shown talent for excelling in what some would consider thankless positions.
